Narrative and Documentary Editing With Final Cut Pro
Course Description
This three-week class is designed to help cement the concepts of non-linear editing while also teaching the fundamentals of narrative and documentary editing.
Week 1, Introduction to Final Cut Pro
Learn the technical ins and outs of Final Cut Pro in this five-day intensive, FCP 200 course. Topics include navigating the interface, basic editing techniques, customizing settings and preferences, capturing video and audio, trimming, filters, basic motion attributes, editing audio, multi-cam editing, finishing and final output. At the end of the week, students have the opportunity to take the Level 1 FCP End User Exam and become an Apple Certified Pro.
Since many students finish the one-week Final Cut Pro 200 class hungry for more experience, the three-week course then provides the opportunity to spend two weeks editing scenes from real narrative and documentary films, under the supervision and guidance of a professional editor.
Week 2, Narrative Editing
This week focuses on scenes from scripted projects. Students will be able to choose which scenes appeal most to them, and the material offers a range of styles. Scenes available for editing include sections from Tully, an Independent Spirit Award-nominee; The Missing Person, starring Oscar nominees Michael Shannon and Amy Ryan; Assisted Living, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance; and many others, all of which are past projects of the Edit Center’s six-week course. Lecture topics include narrative editing strategies, scene analysis.
Week 3, Documentary Editing
This week features scenes from Reporter, the Sundance documentary about Pulitzer-prize-winning columnist Nicholas Kristof and Finishing Heaven, which was produced by Independent Spirit Award nominees David and Laurie Shapiro and premiered HBO. Students will be able to choose between verite and interview-based scenes at a variety of difficulty levels.
Instructors
The teacher of the three-week course is always an experienced, professional editor, and students receive one-on-one instruction and feedback throughout the course.
Who Should Attend?
Students who wish to become more familiar with Final Cut Pro software and basic editing techniques, but who might not have the time to take the Edit Center’s six-week Art of Editing course. However, students looking to build a showreel with their cut scenes would be better suited in our six-week class as scenes worked on in the three-week class cannot be taken home.
Course Cost and Prerequisites
$3,500 for all three weeks.
Students have the option to bypass the first week of FCP training if they have previously passed the Level 1 FCP Certification test. Additionally, the Narrative and Documentary editing weeks may be taken individually at a cost of $1,250 per week. Students who are interested in registering for less than the standard three weeks, must do so by phone. Feel free to call us at 212.691.2370.
